Insightful approaches to problems of youth

I am raising butterflies as a volunteer project for science demonstrations in schools in my area," says Ruth (Schwartz) Rogg, Ed.B. '63. Rogg taught in Rochester-area schools for six years, then moved to Boston, where she edited textbooks for Ginn, the educational publishers. She earned an M.A. in the teaching of reading at Northeastern University.

In addition to doing freelance editing and substitute teaching, she has been a dedicated volunteer in the Hillsborough, Fla. schools for the past 13 years while raising two sons. Rogg has received several awards for her volunteer efforts, which included starting a Junior Great Books discussion group and writing grants for cultural projects targeted to disadvantaged kindergarten students. As a volunteer, she also developed a motivational program for seventh graders. Rogg plans to teach this fall in a federal remedial program in non-public schools.

"I remember my UB years fondly," says Rogg, who was active at UB in the future teachers organization. She especially appreciates the education classes "with George Movession-he influenced me in dealing with disadvantaged children as well as in understanding each child as an individual."
