Applying management skills to needs of youth

The thing I really got from UB is keeping active," remarks Kevin McMillan, B.S. '82 & M.A. '85. "Never stay still."

McMillan certainly never stayed still as captain of UB's varsity basketball team. And with two degrees from the university-a bachelor's in management and a master's in economics-Kevin McMillan has since found many ways to keep moving. After eleven years with Jersey Central Power and Light, McMillan has started a new job a bit closer to home in Neptune, N.J. He's executive director of administration for the local Boys and Girls Clubs.

The 34-year-old McMillan-who's happily married with two kids-has been on the board of directors of the community youth group since 1989, eventually serving as its president. Meanwhile, he picked up an additional M.B.A. in marketing at Fairleigh Dickinson University in Rutherford, N.J.

A coach of youth basketball teams for the Boys and Girls Clubs, McMillan helps run the Program for Acceleration in Computer Science Careers at nearby Monmouth College, which tutors disadvantaged students in math and computer science.

"These programs give people equal opportunity to compete on equal footing," he notes.

"At UB, it was always taught to us to give something back. I remember professors telling me, 'Kevin, don't forget where you came from.'"
